The Home
Air Audit

You've just watched it: Canyon Ranch now sells homes where purified air comes as standard. Engineered air is becoming what a home simply is. Which leaves the question from the reel: who engineered yours?

You're about to find out. In every home we design, we run an advanced air assessment with professional equipment. What follows is the version you can run yourself, starting in the next three minutes. No equipment. No cost. By tomorrow morning you'll know something about your home that most people, including most architects, never check.

Why air is where we always start

You'll make around 20,000 breaths today. Roughly 11,000 litres of air, most of it inside your home, where the air routinely carries two to five times the pollution of the air outside. And here's the unnerving part: your nose stopped detecting it within minutes of moving in. Your body never did.

Air is the thing you consume most, and the one nobody checks. It is the first pillar we measure in every home.

What clean air actually buys you:

You can't feel any of this happening day to day. Which is exactly why the people who measure it end up ahead. Ready? Three checks.

One. The ventilation question

Three minutes, do it now

Put this down for a moment and walk your home, room by room, asking one question: where is fresh air coming in? An open window, trickle vents, a ventilation system. It sounds almost too simple, and it reveals more than any gadget: most people discover at least one room, often the bedroom, where the honest answer is nowhere. That room is your priority, because it's where you spend eight unbroken hours.

The fix: cross-ventilation, twice a day. Open windows on opposite sides of the home for five to ten minutes, morning and evening. It replaces the air in most rooms faster than leaving one window cracked all day, and it costs you nothing but the habit. Most of our clients are surprised how quickly the home starts feeling different.

Two. The smell reset

Next time you're out

This one is almost a party trick. The next time you've been out of the house for two hours or more, pay close attention to the first ten seconds when you walk back in. That's the only window in which you can smell your own home the way a guest does. Whatever you notice, fresh paint, new furniture, a hint of damp, yesterday's cooking, is what you're breathing all day, every day, invisibly. Write it down. Every smell is a source you can now trace.

The fix: go after the source, never the smell. Air out new furniture somewhere else for its first weeks, ventilate hard after painting or cooking, investigate damp rather than covering it. And skip scented candles and plug-ins: they don't clean anything, they just add another layer of chemistry to the air you were trying to fix.

Three. The morning fog test

Tonight

Tonight, sleep exactly as you normally do, door and windows shut if that's your habit. Tomorrow, before coffee, before your phone, ask yourself one question: how does my head feel? If the answer is groggy and heavy, elevated CO2 is one of the most likely culprits. In a sealed bedroom it climbs steadily all night, and studies link stuffy bedrooms to worse sleep and slower thinking the next day. The fascinating part: most people have felt this fog for years and blamed everything except the room.

The fix: stop sealing yourself in. Door open, or a window cracked when climate and noise allow. Even a small opening changes the shape of the whole night, and this is the one fix on this page you can feel by tomorrow morning. The full answer is to measure it properly, which is exactly what we do in every home we assess.

Your result

Passed all three

Genuinely impressive. Your air is ahead of most homes we walk into, including some very expensive ones.

Failed one or more

Even better, in a way. You've most likely just found the highest-leverage upgrade in your home, and every fix above is free.

This is step one of 129

Everything above will improve your air. Engineering it properly, filtration, humidity control, fresh air that flows while you sleep without opening a window to the cold and the noise, is what we design. Air is one of 129 variables we assess across ten pillars of health in every home, measured with professional equipment. Canyon Ranch made engineered air a selling point. We make it, and everything around it, measurable in your home.
